Assignment 4

For this assignment, I had to watch a movie of my choice and analyze how some of the shots we learned about last week were used in the film specifically to create emotion. For my movie, I chose Avengers: Infinity War. I decided on this movie because I was very familiar with it (I had seen it three times before this assignment) I thought that because I knew the film so well, I could focus more on the assignment and identifying the shots.

This is a close-up and follow shot. The shot focuses on an unknown character's feet as they walk through a destroyed spaceship. This shot creates a lot of emotion within the viewer, firstly, it creates shock in the viewer as they see the many dead bodies that lie on the spaceship floor. Secondly, they feel curiosity, as the audience wonders the fate of the characters they know reside on that ship, and lastly, it creates this sense of helplessness. This feeling of hopelessness stems mostly from the focus on the feet, this creates a sense of separation and seniority of the person walking, making the subject feel superior to the bodies that lie beneath them.

This is another follow shot, but it is also an over the shoulder shot. This shot, however, focuses more on the perspective of the character, in this case, Tony Stark. The scene begins with Tony opening the door onto the streets of New York, the camera follows him as he walks down the road. The shot not only establishes the setting but also creates an emotional connection. The street is filled with confusion the shaky nature of the shot itself reflects this, it also encapsulates the fear of the people reflecting that back onto the audience.

This is a panning shot. I found this shot interesting because of its use of perspective, from the first angle the subject, Nebula looks to be just suspended, however, once the shot pans the audience sees that she is taken apart and being tortured. This realization shocks the viewer and creates sympathy for a character that up until this point has been more of a villain. It also provides a cool example of visual storytelling.

This is an over the shoulder close-up. I like this shot because you can feel the pain that the subject is feeling through their facial expression. Within the context of the movie this shot comes from a triumphant moment in the film as it seems that finally, Thor will be able to defeat Thanos. When the viewer sees this, they feel a sense of relief that Thanos appears to be beaten. However, they also feel doubt about whether Thor has actually won.

I enjoyed this assignment a lot, I gave me a new way of viewing and analyzing film. The next time I watch a movie I will for sure pay much more attention to shots and how they convey emotion to the viewer!
